Tarantulas

Here at Bug’s we have around 15 tarantulas though only a few are used in shows. We have Buffy the Chile Rose, Trudy the salmon pink and Vesper the Brazilian Black.

Bonxie
Bonxie the Chile Rose tarantula is a rescue tarantula whom we took on as her owner could no longer care for her. Unfortunately she was most likely wild caught as many Chile Rose’s are and efforts are being made to breed more in captivity. Sadly they are not the easiest tarantulas to breed though we are on the lookout for a nice boyfriend for Bonxie.

Vesper
Vesper is a young Brazilian black tarantula who has been with Bugs since 2004. She is captive bred and was the size of a medium-sized house spider when she first arrived though has grown a bit since then.

Trudy
Trudy is the largest tarantula we have at Bugs. She is a salmon pink tarantula which is widely regarded as one of the largest species in the world. Salmon pinks are known to have large clutches of spiderlings with 1-2000 being recorded from a single eggsack.

The best enclosures we find are plastic faunariums with vented lids. In winter our tarantulas are given additional heat by means of a large heat cable threaded throughout the shelving unit where their tanks are placed. We use sterile choir substrate with a half buried flower pot to act as a hide. Tarantulas are very easy to keep overall though some carry more of a punch than our show spiders. All of our tarantulas are fed on crickets, locusts, cockroaches and the occassional defrosted mouse.
