Scorch
Leopard geckos are very popular pets in the reptile keeping hobby due to their hardiness, ease of care, small size and docile nature. They have also been recorded as living up to 23 years and as long as their set up is correct they thrive in captivity and are bred with ease.
As with the ever popular corn snakes these geckos have been selectively bred to produce many different colour morphs. Scorch himself is known as a “high yellow” animal due to his lack of many spots and yellow colour.
Scorch lives in a glass vivarium which measures 30(l)x15(h)x12(d)”. Leopard geckos do not climb much and prefer having more floor space. Perhaps sadly Scorch will live out much of his life on his own as he would fight with another male and would constantly harass a female to mate.
Although it looks rather un-natural we have lined Scorch’s viv with kitchen roll. This is to prevent him accidentally swallowing substrate when he eats which would eventually cause impaction. A third of his tank is heated with a heat mat attached to a thermostat.
Our little yellow man loves his food and eats crickets, meal worms and locusts around 3 times a week. These are dusted with vitamin powder and calcium to ensure he gets all the nutrients he needs. He is a cheeky character and always has his nose pressed to the front of the viv whenever someone is in the room.
