Here at Bugs we have several species of giant millipedes some of which we’ve enjoyed success with breeding. They are all kept together along with our hissing cockroaches in a large fish tank filled with 4-5″ of organic compost, rotting leaves and some cork bark for them to hide under.
Orange banded millipedes
This small millipede species originally come from the USA. We bought a breeding trio over ten years ago and the animals we use now are the grandchildren of our original three. This species is not shy and given they breed easily in captivity we feel they are a more suitable species.
Burmese millipedes
We have several of this species which are from Burma originally, they are relatively large and thin but are a little shy and often “ink” when they are handled. We are making an effort to handle them a bit more to get them used to it.
Often you will see the largest species of millipede on display but at Bugs we currently do not used the giant blacks. The reason for this is that they remain difficult to breed in captivity and individuals offered for sale are almost always wild caught. Bugs and Beasts do not purchase wild caught animals for use in our shows.
