Species: European Green tree Frog Hyla arborea
Expected lifespan: 4 - 6 years
DOB: 2009 for both
Both
of these guys were captive bred here in the UK and were bought
as companions for Padge our old tree frog who turned up in
a bag of salad bought in a supermarket. Padge lived with
us for just over 2 years and was retired in the summer of
2009, unfortunately he died in March 2010. We were hoping that at least one of Pipsqueak and Piggles
is a female frog so that we may attempt to breed them in the
future. One is definately a male as we have heard him calling.
European
green tree frogs live across mainland Europe but are under
threat from human activity. They tend to live near the edges
of forests, heaths, parks and scrubland.
Our tree frogs live in a large glass vivarium measuring
24(l)x24(h)x12(d) inches. this is filled with plants (both
live and artificial) and there is also a large shallow water
dish for them to bath in. This is changed daily with rainwater
as this contains far less chemicals than tap water which the
frogs would absorb through their skin.
Piggles & Pipsqueak's enclosure
All
of our frogs are quite greedy and will happily stuff most
small insects into their mouths. Often they will jump across
their viv in an attempt to catch flying insects which we feed
to them such as moths and bluebottles. They are all very agile
though Piggles is the braver of the two and will tolerate
handling a little bit better than his sibling.
During
the day they all like to hide and though Padge would often
sleep on the leaves of his favourite plant Pipsqueak and Piggles
more often like to hide up in the top corners of the viv.
